Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco has manufactured top-sealing and throat-mount dampers for decades, and the name on the door means you may have one of several generations. The common throat-mount units from the 1990s and early 2000s use a cast-iron frame with a handle that runs through the firebox wall. Later Gelco top-sealing dampers mount at the crown and use a cable or chain mechanism that runs down the flue to a control bracket inside the firebox. The repair path is different for each, and so is the hardware.

How to identify what you have: open the damper and look for a Gelco stamp on the plate itself, often on the rear edge. If the stamp is gone, measure the throat opening front-to-back and side-to-side while the damper is fully open, and note whether the frame is held by bolts or embedded in mortar. Gelco uses throat sizes in 24, 30, 36, 42, and 48-inch widths, and the 36-inch is by far the most common unit we see in older White Plains colonials. The gotcha: aftermarket frames that “fit” a Gelco opening may still leave a 1/4-inch gap at the rear edge. That gap is where smoke and heat escape. • A faint smell of ash or creosote in the room, even with no fire. An open or misaligned damper lets flue odor drop into the living space. This is the one most people wait on. We’d rather inspect it while the seal is still lightly failing than once the casting itself is gone.
