• Rattling in high wind. The mounting legs or clamp ring have loosened from repeated heating and cooling. That’s metal fatigue, not something that re-tightens itself.
• Rust stains on the cap crown. Galvanized caps fail at the weld points first. Once the coating breaks, the rust spreads under the paint.
• Spalling on the chimney crown around the cap base. Water pooling around the legs freezes and pops the mortar. The cap is the cause, not the crown.

What you can’t safely do is work on a flue while standing on a ladder leaned against the chimney, and no one should be on a steep roof with wind gusts off the Long Island Sound without proper fall protection and a second person.
